Dublin Dwelling

My girlfriend and I on a recent trip to London were invited to stay at the home of a sculptor and professor in Dublin Ireland. The home is a classic brownstone row house you see through out Dublin. The house is an incredible work of art inside where Paul has redesigned the interior spaces to adapt to his modern lifestyle. His collection of Art has inspired many of the spaces and their transformation as well as his passion for entertaining and cooking. On our arrival he was working on enlarging the kitchen and building a sculpture studio in the back. I was reminded of the early days of Dwell magazine where the homes were less slick and the homes featured pushed the boundaries of what home can be. The floor on the second floor was opened up and replaced with a thick glass bringing light to the downstairs kitchen area. The same idea was used in the attic that was converted to Paul’s home office. Paul used skylights to bring in the rare commodity of natural light to the attic and also brought in views of Dublin’s rainy skyline. Paul uses free standing commercial components to add function to the kitchen. The old oven is the centerpiece of the kitchen. In the photos Paul is getting ready to open the back wall and add a steel bar he hand built that will look out to his new art studio. My favorite decorator touch and a testimony to Paul’s generous spirit as a host was the guest bedroom he prepared for me to stay in. I had entered my third trimester of my pregnancy during my visit and Paul had laid out a jar of pickles, a bottle of sparkling water and a flower on the bedside table to greet me. Hope you are as inspired as I am by this old meets new Dublin dwelling.
