Yummy Vegan Food in Portland (and beyond)

Okay so let me preface this by saying I am not necessarily a vegan, but I am a vegetarian who loves to eat so I am tirelessly trying all the vegan restaurants I can, for you dear reader.  Also lately I have been doing a lot of hot yoga and it seems that eating healthier and hot yoga seem to go hand in hand.  (My sixteen year old bacon lovin punk rock self would be mortified, but that chick can shut it she doesn’t understand what it is like to get older.)  Also if you are interested in hot yoga let me tell you that Hot Yoga For Life has a 10 classes for $10 deal!

So when you are in NE clearly the top choice would be The Bye and Bye.  Just writing about it has made me drool while thinking about the Brussels Bowl.  Other favorites include, well everything.  The drinks are good (warning:not a great bloody Mary), the servers are pleasant, and the atmosphere is great with low lighting that makes me feel better about myself.  This place is so good you should buy a house within walking distance of it!  Check out houses in the Alberta Arts Area.

My next recommendation in NE would be the food cart, Native Bowl which has the best garlic tofu. Ever.  My favorite is the Broadway bowl, but all of them are good.  They are at the corner of Mississippi and Skidmore, right across the street from another of my addictions/inspirations Paxton Gate.  Love Mississippi? Live there!

In anticipation of writing this blog I decided to try Blossoming Lotus, just in the name of “journalism”.  Blossoming Lotus is located in the “historic Irvington district” which happens to be one of my favorite parts of town. Let me just tell you that the spicy bbq sandwich is SOOOOO good.  Like, I think I am addicted. My friend Cristina tried the portobello pizza and gave me some bites and it was SOOOOO good too.  Also I had a chai with coconut milk and it was SOOOOO good.  I think what I am trying to say is Blossoming Lotus is SOOOOO good.

In SE there are a plethora of choices, Portobello, Papa-G’s, and Paradox all really lovely and enjoyable-but for me and my money the tastiest, most affordable taco joint in Portland happens to have some of the best vegan food in town.  I am talking about Los Gorditos of course, located in the wonderful Clinton district.  HOLY crap, the soy curls are unbelievable.  Look at these tacos-perfection!

SE Portland also has the only Vegan strip mall in Portland (perhaps the world?), where you can find Food fight an all vegan grocery store, and Herbivore Clothing.  I had a great cup of coffee and some tasty soup at Sweet Pea Bakery while waiting for Brian at Scapegoat to get the stencil for my tattoo finished.  Scapegoat, is to my knowledge, the only vegan tattoo shop in Portland (perhaps the world?).  Living in nearby Buckman would be amazing.  And check out my bad ass new tattoo;

In the ‘burbs I would recommend Veggie Grill.  The staff was crazy friendly and though on the expensive side for “fast food” it was delicious and nutritious!! Seriously when has kale salad ever looked this sexy?

Basically to summarize, Portland rules for Vegan eating and everything else ;)   To find a full list of vegan restaurants check out Northwest VEG.
If you are interested in living where you eat, or eating where you live, give me a call I would love to help you!

Another tasty reason to be my neighbor!

Noel's nut butter cups

Our office is unique in that we have a crew of people with some interesting food allergies and restrictions.  I am one of those people…by choice!  I am a CrossFit nut and have since embraced the Paleo lifestyle along the way.  This is a recipe I found and adapted which is gluten, sugar and dairy free AND…really easy to make! It’s a Reese’s peanut butter cup knockoff and tastes fabulous.

Nummy Nut Butter Cups

3/4 cup cashew nut butter (my favorite brand is Artisana because there are no added oils – just ground cashews)

2 tablespoons raw local honey

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 cup melted coconut oil

Mix these ingredients together in a small bowl and be sure to get rid of any lumps.  Drop a heaping teaspoon of this mix into a mini-muffin tin (or you can use the paper liners).  Leave enough room for the chocolate topping.  Put the pan in the freezer to firm up while you’re making the chocolate topping.

Chocolate topping

2 sections (approx 4 ounces) of Scharffen Berger 99% unsweetened dark chocolate

2 tablespoons of raw local honey

Chop up the chocolate into small pieces and add honey into a double boiler (I have a small glass bowl which fits perfectly onto my small saucepan).  Keep stirring until the mixture is melted and no chunks remain.  Take off of the heat.  Spoon a dollop of chocolate over the frozen nut cups and refreeze.  Pop out with a knife and ENJOY!  I keep mine in container in the freezer and grab one when I need a yummy little snack!  You’ll need to keep them chilled or they will melt into a gooey mess.  These won’t last long!

Variations and notes:

My favorite nut butter is by far cashew, but I’ve also experimented with pecan, almond and coconut butters.  I’ve also added the Scharffen Berger unsweetened cacao nibs to give it some crunch.  I only use the Scharffen Berger Chocolates because their quality is outstanding.  The chocolate melts very evenly and the texture is wonderful for my recipes.  You can also add toasted nuts if you want more crunch to your cups.

A $100k house in Portland?

All this and a bag of chips for 100k!

Looking for that $100,000 house? Why yes, you can find it right now. Of coarse most of them are short sales or bank owned, but not all of them. And no worries, short sales and bank owned sales are getting easier and easier to close. Okay, so your not exactly going to find these little gems in close in Portland. You will be surprised that they are not that far out either. Many of these houses can be found along the NE 82nd Ave corridor (come on, 82nd is not that scary anymore, you can get to the 82nd Ave. exit on the Banfield from downtown in 10 minutes). Montavilla and Lents are totally up-and-coming neighborhoods)–Madison, Montavilla, and Lents, though some can be found in North Portland as well. No you say, I don’t want a fixer. Hey, many of these little houses are ready to go. Perfect for a first home, an investment, or, as my current clients are looking, a cheap way to provide student housing for their son attending PSU. Buying a little house is cheaper than the dorms!

Boundaries

Boundaries

There is a place where the town ends,

and the fields begin.

It’s not marked but the feet know it,

also the heart that is longing for refreshment

and, equally, for repose.

Someday we’ll live in the sky.

Meanwhile, the house of our lives is this green world.

The fields, the ponds, the birds.

The thick black oaks – surely they are

the invention of something wonderful.

And the tiger lilies.

And the runaway honeysuckle that no one

will ever trim again.

Where is it?  I ask, and then

my feet know it.

One jump, and I’m home.

And When the Boat Sinks, Buy a House

As an engineer who assesses risks for a living, Robin could probably tell you the percent chance that a hurricane could sink a boat, and as a television news producer, Chris could help cover the story.  Or maybe he could do a little bio piece to tell the story of their own boat sinking.  Which may have been a launching pad to the question, where to go next?  In the last seven years their love for travel had taken them across the US.  They resided not only in Florida, where they spent sunny days soaking up the rays and surfing,  but also in Colorado, Texas, and Georgia.  Tracking their past addresses for the loan application process was a bit of a Where’s Waldo experiment, minus the candy cane sweater and medieval horses of course.

Then, Robin and Chris welcomed their baby girl, Tallulah, into the world and the concept of where to raise a family was then in play.  Hugo, their loving and loyal mutt, was flexible to any living situation.  He had already lived on a boat after all.  But where was a good place to plant some roots and raise a daughter?  And by plant roots, that’s exactly what they meant.  Robin decided it was time to trade her days in the salty sea for days among soil and seeds.  Gardening was the next adventure, and Portland was calling them home.

Adjusting to “life on land”, they spent their first six months in Portland renting a basement apartment and looking for the perfect place to call their own.  Then one day, there it was.  A charming old Portland style Montavilla home with original unpainted woodwork, great natural light, a roomy front porch, and 3 upstairs bedrooms.  The additional bedroom on the main floor could double as an office, the double car garage would make winters in the Northwest much more tolerable, and the possibilities of what could become of the semi-finished basement just added to the list of what made this one a keeper. The double lot and big yard would leave plenty of room for Tallulah to play, Hugo to explore, and a garden to flourish.  Within walking distance to Country Cat, the seasonal Farmers Market, The Observatory and more, this is where their new adventures would begin.

I assess the likely-hood that this family will be happy in Portland is pretty high, and the experiences of Tallulah’s first years will be fun breaking news stories for their friends and family.  And Hugo? Well, he has no complaints.

The 5 Best Places to Live in the World and Why... Portland!!

Bored with Blighty? Then why not up sticks and move somewhere else? Tom Dyckhoff spotlights five perfect places – from a surfer’s paradise in Hawaii to a bohemian rhapsody in Portland, Oregon

PORTLAND, OREGON

What’s going for it:  Do you like letterpress? Do you like vintage clothes? Do you play in a nu-folk band? Then get ye to Boise, Eliot and Overlook in Portland. The city has been the capital of liberal, hipster USA for decades. The Dandy Warhols wrote Bohemian Like You about their very home town. There are some, indeed, round these parts who’d like the entire Pacific Northwest to break off from the rest of the US and go it alone. So very liberal is Portland that it’s a home from home to anyone from Europe, especially if they read the Guardian. Cyclists are loved, not loathed. There are planning restrictions on crappy developments. Portland has the highest number of microbreweries in the world. Everyone is lovely. My auntie lives there and will make you a nice cup of tea if you’re homesick. H.E.A.V.E.N. Shockingly, it still remains relatively good value. Especially the patch north of the Willamette river above the railyards. When I first visited in the early 90s, Boise, Eliot and Overlook were the kind of spots you sped through: always the first sign of a neighbourhood you should buy in. Now you can’t move for contemporary modern antiques shops and dinky record stores.
The case against Bit too cool for school. Everyone’s like you. Who will you have to hate? Oh, yes, everyone like you. The weather: like Britain, but more so… hotter and colder and danker.
Well connected:   Unusually again for the US, cycle and walk without abuse: the most bike- and foot-friendly city in the country, packed with proper cycle routes (15 minutes to downtown from the northside). You may use the car. Occasionally. Perhaps for a surf trip to the coast, or a ski trip to the mountains (both 60-100 minutes).
Hang out at… A food cart: all the rage. Or, for the indulgent, Grand Central Bakery, in an old scrap metal yard. Artisan, innit.

Property:  The area is full of 1910s and 1920s bungalows that the local real estate guys call “craftsman style”, with handsome stoops and carved wood decoration. There are a fair few vacant lots, too, for the brave, plus 1960s and 1970s infill apartment blocks that, with a zuzz, could be nice. Look off the main drags, like Mississippi and Interstate regeneration projects. Huge detacheds, £415,000-£575,000; four-bed-plus detacheds, £225,000-£415,000; two- or three-bed detacheds, £140,000-£215,000. Condos below this. Bargain of the week Two-bed detached on NE Sacramento, £128,000.

If you are British (or not!) and care to check out the pickins’ in our fair city, as per Tom Dyckhoff- click on Boise, Eliot, Interstate & Overlook to see Real Estate available in those neighborhoods. Call or email yours truly, diviner of all housing potential. At Living Room Realtors  WE GET IT!  It’s great to be you and to live in Portland!!

When our clients called to let us know we had been chosen to represent their home we were simply ecstatic. The client inhabits a most beautiful home and lives and works inside the dwelling in such a way so as to reveal feelings of jealously. This abode lives beautifully.

Looking out to the territorial views is downright sexy when lounging on the couch pondering the gas lit fire reading Steve Jobs biography.
